About Rolled Ice Cream
Where did Roll Ice Cream Originate From?
Rolled ice cream originated in Thailand in 2009 and was originally called “I Tim Pad.” It’s also known as “Thai rolled ice cream” or “stir-fried ice cream.” Street vendors in Thailand created it as a way to entertain customers while they waited. The process is simple: pour an ice cream base onto a cold metal plate, mix in fresh ingredients, flatten it, and then roll it into spirals. In 2015, the trend made its way to the United States, where it became popularly known as “ice cream rolls.”

Rolled Ice Cream V.S Regular
There are four key differences between rolled ice cream and regular ice cream.
- First, their preparation methods are different: rolled ice cream is spread and rolled on a frozen pan, while regular ice cream is churned in a machine.
- The texture of rolled ice cream is denser and smoother because it incorporates less air, resulting in a richer flavor, whereas regular ice cream tends to have a milder taste due to the churning process.
- When it comes to customization, with rolled ice cream, toppings can be added directly during preparation, while regular ice cream has toppings added after serving.
- Finally, rolled ice cream is presented as thin rolls, whereas regular ice cream is scooped.
Benefits of Rolled Ice Cream (Calories)
Did you know that rolled ice cream tends to have fewer calories because it can be made with just two ingredients: a base and a choice of fresh ingredients. As a result, it contains less sugar and fewer calories. It is also denser than traditional ice cream since no air is incorporated during the preparation process. Rolled ice cream often features fresh fruits, which contribute added vitamins. However, the calorie content can vary depending on the specific ingredients and portion sizes. Additionally, both rolled and regular ice cream can have different calorie counts based on the flavors and toppings selected.
